Holiday Hours

We will be closing early Tuesday, 12/24/13 at 12 noon and closed the 25th Wednesday, for Christmas. On Tuesday 12/31/13 we close at 12 noon and closed on Wednesday, January 1st.  We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Food Drive for St. Vincent de Paul

Ye Olde Art Shoppe will be collecting nonperishable food items for distribution by Myrtle Creek St. Vincent de Paul, to area residents needing emergency foods.  We will be collecting the nonperishable food items until December 31, 2013.  St. Vincent de Paul's is also requesting toys for children.  Please contribute and help the needy.

Winter Sunrise Workshop begins Wednesday

By special request, we’ll have a 3-part oil/acrylic workshop to paint this beautiful winter scene. Follow along, step by step, as we study color theory and paint “A Glow at Sunrise”.    In this workshop you’ll learn how to use a limited palette, how to blend the soft colors of sunrise, how to mix the colors of snow and how to paint water reflections. 

Workshop will be held in 3 parts, starting this Wednesday, December 4, 2013 from 1 PM to 4 PM and again the following 2 Wednesdays, (Dec. 11 & 18).   This is an Intermediate class (or Advanced Beginner).

Instructor is Maureen Butler. Workshop fee is $22 and includes a discount coupon for canvas size of your choice. Bring your paints and brushes. This landscape involves a lot of blending, so oils are recommended, however, we’ll also demonstrate some acrylic blending tips if that is your medium of choice.

Open House and going away party for Ned Vancott

On Saturday 11/23 there is going to be a combination open house for the Student Art Show and a going away party for Ned.  It will be from 11:00am to 2:00pm.  Bring your favorite finger food and enjoy the art display and wish Ned a good move.

Winter Workshops Coming Soon!

Starting December 3rd (during lull between Fall term and Winter term), we'll be having some 1 and 2 day painting workshops  Dates will be announced soon.  Maureen Butler will have an oil/acrylic winter landscape paint-along and Billie Sheets will teach her annual miniatures workshop.   Other painting workshops may be announced soon.   If you have any special requests or suggestions, please tell Bonnie or Susie!

Student Art Show - Call for Entries

All during the months of November and December, Ye Olde Art Shoppe will be displaying in the Gallery the work of our art class students.    Do you have any paintings you're interested in selling or displaying?   Just let Bonnie know.   All students are welcome.  All mediums will be shown....oils, acrylics, pastels and pencils!  The only requirements are that painting must be framed and ready to hang and that it was created by our own art students!

Don't forget to visit the Gallery during the show and possibly purchase a very special Holiday gift!

New Art Classes Start This Week

Art classes for the Fall term begin this week.  Enrollment for some of the classes is through UCC and some are not.   There's still time to sign up!   For the UCC classes, Seniors 60 and over are eligible for a 50% Gold Card discount on class fee.

Check our "Classes" page for detailed class descriptions. Choose your favorite medium or try a new one!  There's classes for oils, acrylics, watercolors, and colored pencils.

Patriotic Art Show Reception

Watercolor Class Starts Oct. 1st

If you're interested in learning transparent watercolor techniques, sign up now for class beginning Oct.1, 2013 and ending Dec. 3rd. There will be 8 classes on Tuesday afternoons from 1 PM to 4 PM (no class on Oct. 15th & Nov. 12th).

A variety of techniques and procedures used in transparent watercolor painting will be explored, such as direct & indirect painting, washes, negative painting, etc. The course will include instruction in composition (design principles,) color theory, and the use of values to create contrast. Instructor is Debbie Aken and class fee is $80.00.

Fall Landscape Workshop Next Wednesday

Golden Pond

New workshop starts next Wednesday 9/18 at 1 PM.  Oils or Acrylics.  Any size canvas up to 16x20.  We'll paint this Fall scene using a pastry brush to create some of the trees and foliage.  We'll also add some deer, horses, moose or a fisherman...whatever you want...or none of the above!  Painting will be completed in 2 sessions, with 2nd part on Wednesday 9/25 at 1 PM.  Instructor is Maureen Butler and class fee is $25.

Date Changed for Computer Workshop

The "Get Acquainted with Your Computer" workshop scheduled to start this Saturday, September 7th, has been postponed to a week from Saturday on September 14th at the request of the students.  This workshop is especially for beginners who want to learn their way around Windows.   We'll start at 11AM and take a lunch bring a lunch!

Call for Entries!

We're still taking entries for the September patriotic art exhibit. Paintings can be any subject, any media, but they must include a representation of the American flag somewhere in the painting.

As part of this patriotic event, there will be an open house on Saturday, September 21st from 10 AM to 2 PM with refreshments furnished by art students. Veterans from the VFW will be present to speak about the flag, its meaning, how to dispose of old worn out flags and who to contact at the VFW to get a new flag.

Workshop: Windows for Beginners!

It's time to get acquainted with your computer!   Yes!  We're going to have a computer workshop at Ye Olde Art Shoppe especially for the over 50 crowd!   If you're an absolute beginner, we can get you started!   If you've been using computer for a while, we'll answer those questions that have been bugging you and show you how to use computer to help create your artwork!

In 4 weeks, we’ll cover all the basics that every computer user should know.
Everyone will get hands on practice and extra help, if needed, outside of class.
Classes begin Saturday Sept. 7th
from 11 am to 3 pm....bring a lunch....we'll take a long break!

A few computers will be available in class, but if you have your own laptop, please bring it. Class fee is $20 for all 4 weeks and will cover all supplies.   Please let Bonnie know in advance if you'll be attending so we'll be sure to have enough handouts for everyone!   See you there!

Author Dan Oliver

Dan Oliver, author of "The Dust of Old Dole Road" will be at Ye Olde Art Shopped July 3rd from 1-3pm for a book signing session. Dan Oliver was raised in Myrtle Creek and is a local celebrity in this area.   This is a last minute/impromptu book signing, therefore the late notice on the blog. Hope to see people coming and enjoying talking to Dan Oliver.

Carol Kann certified instructor of Bob Ross, The Joy of Painting, as seen on TV, will be starting Saturday classes at Ye Old Art Shoppe once a month.  It will be oils wet on wet procedure, 8 hr day, with a 1 hr lunch break.  The fee for her classes will be $50 with all supplies furnished.  Minimum class size is six up to 16 per class.  If anyone is interested please call us at 541-863-6843 or email us at  Once we have enough people for a class then we will send out a date when it will be.


Helen Fortner's  Kids Class is now on Tuesday from 1pm to 4pm starting on July 9th-July 30th. Price for class is $25

Maureen Butler's mini workshop class is Thursday Aug 22nd & Aug 29th from 1pm to 4pm.   Price for class $25.

New Ownership / Grand Opening

Ye Olde Art Shoppe is now under new ownership.  Bonnie Gregory is now back in the business again.  In December 2002 Bonnie and Linda Johnson opened the shop together, but three years later Bonnie's husband developed cancer and she left the business to take care of him.  Until recently Linda took care the shop herself and has now decided to retire and Bonnie is back in the business again.

The grand opening / new ownership meet and greet will be on June 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with refreshments being furnished.  We look forward to meeting new and old faces in the community.

Don’t be afraid of painting people any more! Using techniques taught by Australian artist Robert Hagan, we’ll show you a foolproof way to include people in your paintings.

Paint along, step by step, as we create this nostalgic summer scene of a boy on beach with fishing pole. Two pelicans wait nearby ...maybe hoping to grab a fish!

Workshop will be held in 2 parts, starting on:
Thursday afternoon, June 20, 2013 from 1 PM to 4 PM

and again the following Thursday afternoon, June 27th,
\if more time is needed to complete the painting.

Instructor is Maureen Butler. In this workshop you’ll learn how to work with a limited palette, mix skin tones, create folds in clothing, paint reflections and more. Workshop fee is $20 and includes 11x14 canvas board and a few supplies. Bring your paints and brushes. Oils or Acrylics. You’ll need a large flat brush, a small (¼”) flat brush and a detail brush along with the following 6 colors: 

Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt Blue
Burnt Sienna or Red Oxide
Cadmium Red Light or Cad Red Medium
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Yellow Deep

Don’t be afraid of painting people any more! This is a reproduction of a classic painting by the famous Scottish artist Jack Vettriano titled “Sweet Bird of Youth”.

This very simple and delicate study was first shown in 1995. The title is taken from a song by Leonard Cohen, who is one of Vettriano’s favorite singers.

New Watercolor Class starts Feb. 26, 2013
